Capturing memories and some great photos

Last week I celebrated by 33rd birthday. With graying whiskers and growing forehead, I am on the road to getting old. But I don’t let the upcoming baldness keep me from being young. I took my kids to Holdman Studios at Thanksgiving Point in Lehi, Utah to make glass flowers.

I had purchased a Living Social deal to make four glass flowers for $56. I was looking to make it a double date with my wife and another couple, but we weren’t able to get that scheduled and the vouchers were quickly expiring. So we scheduled a session and went down ready to make art.

We picked out our colors, though I think my kids picked out much better colors than me. We sat on the bench and waited for the molten ball of glass clinging to the end of a metal rod to come our way so we could shape the ball into a blooming flower. After all that work and excitement, we had to leave them behind so they could slowly cool, so it wasn’t until a few days later that I was able to get down to Lehi to pick them up.

Once I got the kids to bed tonight, I whipped out my camera stuff to snap a few photos of the flowers with a LED backlight and a Speedlight mounted to the camera to help illuminate the glass. In the end, I really liked how the photos turned out – plus it made my rather poor color choices look much better than it does in person. :-)

Anyway, if you live within driving distance of Thanksgiving Point and are looking for a fun family or youth group activity, check out Holdman Studios and click on Glass Flowers to book a session today.

Lego Family’s Storytime with Junior

My son is a Lego builder and I am a photographer. So when we mix the two together, we end up with photos like this.

Lego story time

Mom and dad Lego are enjoying some time on the family couch reading Junior a book. I know that for me and my family, we enjoy moments very similar to this and have a bazillion books throughout the house. Family story time is a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. :-)

Watch out for the Carlton Posse

A few weeks ago I took a trip to Houston (sans kids) to visit my wife who’s been down there since December. On my way back home, I swung by a gift shop at the airport to grab a little something for my kids, since they were upset that I went to Houston and they didn’t (but at $900 a ticket, it just wasn’t feasible). I found Sheriff badges with my kids’ names on them. I figured they would enjoy the Texan flare of their gift.

When I got home, the kids, as predicted, really liked the star-shaped badges. It helped make them less upset with me, too. :-)

The following week, I thought it would be fun to swing by Zurchers (our local party supply store) and grab some supplies to help “Cowboy’ify” and “Cowgirl-ify” who kids for a photo shoot. The idea was to capture a photo of my kids and share it with my wife. It was a little bit of a challenge to keep the kids from spilling the beans to my wife, but they kept their lips sealed throughout the whole process.

So honey, if you’re reading this – this photo is for you!

The Carlton Posse

As for the photography side of things, it was fun to use my little photo studio to capture each kid separately, but assure the lighting was the same for each one. Then I used Photoshop to put the three hoodlums in the same photo. The backdrop got a little challenging, so I had to compile two different photos – one of the garage door and the other of a gravel road down the street. I was hoping that would make it look more western.

I was pretty pleased with the final outcome, and while the garage and kid photos were shot with my Canon 60D, the gravel road was shot with my iPhone during a walk with the kids earlier today.

So while I am happy to share the photography elements behind the photo, the purpose was to bring a smile to my wife’s face, knowing that the kids and me love her and hope she knows the Carlton Posse will be there for her and look forward to seeing her in person later this month.

Weekly Photo Challenge: Beyond (the lollipop)

I learned about this week’s The Daily Post at WordPress.com’s Weekly Photo Challenge before I packed my kids and I up for a trip to Houston, Texas. So as we spent the weekend with my wife checking out parts of Houston, I was looking for a fun capture for BEYOND.

The moment came when my daughter was enthralled with the size of her lollipop. I think it’s every kids dream to get a lollipop this big – and it makes it difficult to look BEYOND the lollipop to see what else is going on around you.

Big eyes and a big lollipop

(NOTE: I am not sure why my camera was set at ISO 2000. I guess that explains some of the graininess I’m seeing in the photo.)

After some fun checking out the Downtown Aquarium in Houston (including two rides on the Shark Voyage Train), we took a breather to grab a snack. This was her snack. I wish I would have been that excited about the large pretzel my wife and I got to share.

Decisions: Black and white OR color

My last blog post shared a photo of my daughter running along the beach with the low-setting sun. Another photo I shot at that same San Franciscan beach was of my son collecting a few of the bazillion sand dollars that littered the beach. I love the innocence of this photo, too, along with the reflection of my son in the water retreating from the beach.

I am thinking of printing the photo on canvas and hanging it in our home. But I am torn between the black and white version of the photo, or the color version. I really like his blue jacket, but I’m not a fan of the orange color of his face. The black and white kills both of those elements, but still makes it a great photo.

If you were printing this for your home, would you go black and white OR color?

Weekly Photo Challenge: Free Spirit

I must confess that the idea for this photo came from my wife. When I read the challenge on Friday, I wasn’t sure what I could do and thought I would end up spending a lot of time thinking, or even over-thinking, the challenge. But when I mentioned it to my lovely wife, she pointed out that we were going kayaking the next day, which could be a great representation of the Free Spirit photo challenge.

090112 Free Spirit Kayaking

Although I would have loved to take my Canon 60D out on the kayak with me, my nightmare of losing the camera into the water got the better of me. But, I had my GoPro, dive housing and a 16 GB SD card, so I headed out on the lake.

After getting out into the water, I took a few shots from under the water – but worried that the green, murky water didn’t bode well for a great photo, so I took some shots from the surface, capturing the kayak on the water, with the stark contrast of the white clouds and blue sky above. I wish I had a floating contraption that would have allowed me to not stretch out my arm and have it be that awkward part of the photo, but I made do with what I had.

Once I got home and surveyed the photos, I found the one above and brought it into Photoshop. I made some minor adjustments to the levels, and thought I would also make some adjustments to the saturation – just to give it a slightly different look. I thought a lens flare would look good on the photo, but then my purist thoughts got the better of me. I didn’t want to doctor the photo and add elements I hadn’t captured in the shot.

As for the free spirit part of the photo… I love kayaking. I love paddling my way out onto a lake, setting the paddle across the cockpit and floating there on the water. It is a great way to escape from the hussle and bussle of life and simply enjoy nature. Regardless of how rough the lake water is, I enjoy getting away from shore.

With Labor Day marking the unofficial end of summer, I am not sure how many more kayaing trips my family and I will be able to get in before things start to get a little chilly and eventually ice over, but for a Labor Day weekend, it was a great end to the summer vacations!

How I Spent My Summer photo contest

I will admit that this is a shameless plug to promote a photo contest I am coordinating for work, but it’s open to anyone so I thought I would share it here. However, the photos used in the promotional graphic below are all ones that I have shot over the years so I felt okay in sharing this on my blog.

I’ve seen some pretty amazing photos that people have shared on their blogs, so I know the caliber of photos that could be submitted to the contest.

Plus, there is a $100 Wal-Mart gift card up for grabs.

Here’s a link to the photo contest where you can get all the details and submit your photo (http://bit.ly/RVSummerPhoto). But don’t forget to encourage your Facebook friends and family to vote for the photo so you can win the grand prize. We’re also randomly selecting a weekly winner this Friday and next to win a $25 Wal-Mart gift card, so don’t wait too long to get your entry in.

Good luck.

Help a fellow amateur photographer out

I usually don’t reach out to others to ask them to vote for my photo when it’s in a photo contest, but I really like this photo of my daughter that I snapped at a wedding last year and think it is a great candid portrait.

I know there are a lot of great photos out there, but I hope you’ll help a fellow amateur  photographer out and click on the link to vote for this photo in Pictureline’s weekly photo contest.

Thanks in advance to all those who’ll take a moment to vote.

Alphabet Photo Challenge: W is for Watery Slide

I had a really cool shot in mind for this week, using the word Water for W. However, it’s been a crazy week yet again, so I didn’t have the time to set up the shot and take it. But eventually I will, and I think the wait will be worth it.

Anyway, during a birthday party today for my niece, my daughter went on a trip down the watery slide (slip and slide). She was gracious enough to take the GoPro down with her; I’d set it to take a photo every .5 seconds and ended up with this one that was the best.

Did anyone else photograph something for the letter W this week? Now on to the Weekly Photo Challenge from WordPress – Friendship.

Stories in honor of National Cancer Survivors Day

Leo Carlton during his pilot training (roughly 1943).

In 1997, I lost my grandpa Carlton to leukemia. Since my aunts, uncles and grandma on my dad’s side keep telling me that I am his spitting image, I guess I have a special bond to him. In honor of tomorrow (June 3) being National Cancer Survivors Day, I wanted to write this post to honor him.

It wasn’t until two years ago when I dove head first into a history project for my grandpa. He was a B-24 co-pilot based in Cerignola, Italy with the 459th Bomb Group. During his 10th mission, his plane was damaged near Munich, Germany, and they tried to land in Switzerland. However, a dummy runway setup by the Germans served it’s purpose and their plane, the Cherry II, landed on the wrong side of the border. He and his crew were taken POWs.

His story is one that I am honored to have researched. His personality and attitude toward his very hard circumstances, I feel, are what got him through this fight with cancer. Thought he lost his war in the end, he fought numerous battles – won a few and lost a few.

I write this post in honor of him, and all other cancer survivors. If you, or someone you know is a cancer survivor, click here and take a moment to honor all cancer survivors by writing your (or their) story. This Facebook app allows you to read the stories, share your own, and find hope. You won’t regret it.
